Biodico’s facilities are designed to automate the biodiesel production process.  Biodiesel production is similar to food processing in many ways.  We receive a fairly wide variety of starting goods and need to refine them to a homogenous, fungible product by the time it leaves our gates.  Biodiesel production is composed of various stage gates that the material needs to pass in order to ensure the production of the highest quality biofuel and renewable fuel.  We need to make sure that compounds a and b are below the levels of x and y before moving from step I to step j many times throughout the day.  One of the keys to automated biodiesel production is real time feedback of chemical composition.  Through a combination of FTNIR spectroscopy and EMF detection, Biodico is able to pinpoint the moment when the fuel is cleared to move to the next stage gate within 15 seconds rather than one hour.

As any commercial producer of finished goods will attest, operator error accounts for most of the problems in production.  No matter how well trained and skilled an operator is, human error is an inevitability with any process.  Valves are usually a big culprit.  With multiple people working on a site, somebody can easily forget to put a lockout tag on a valve or leave something open or closed when it shouldn’t be.  Biodico’s automated biodiesel production facilities are designed with electronically actuated solenoid valves so that entering the next stage of a production cycle is as easy as the push of a button.

The real time testing and the automated biodiesel production valves work together so that the operator can be prompted that the facility is ready to enter into the next stage gate process as soon as the chemical indicators are there.  In a conventional biodiesel production process, roughly two hours of laboratory testing are needed for every one hour of production.  Reaction times and chemical separation times are pushed longer than necessary as well to ensure that processes don’t have to be repeated, to ensure that valuable product is not lost, and to ensure that contamination isn’t an issue.  With real time feedback of the chemical composition of the process, Biodico can run stages of the production process for just the amount of time that is needed.  Automated Biodiesel Production processing allows for Biodico’s MPU technology to produce biodiesel three times as fast as conventional processing technologies.
